Beyoncé's planned concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been canned amid protests by local Muslim groups, Billboard reports. The groups are reportedly upset that the singer has refused to obey the country's strict dress code for performers, although the November 1 concert's promoter, Pineapple Concert, did not give a reason for the cancellation in a statement issued Friday (September 28). Female performers are not allowed to show skin from the tops of their chests to their knees. In August, Gwen Stefani's concert in the country was also preceded by protests for the same reason — but she reluctantly abided by the guidelines, saying in a press conference before the show that she had made a "major sacrifice." ... "Chris said the record won't be No. 1 unless he's on it. Mychal Bell's release on $45,000 bail came hours after a prosecutor confirmed he will no longer seek an adult trial for the 17-year-old. Bell, one of the teenagers known as the Jena Six, still faces trial as a juvenile in the December beating in this small central Louisiana town.
"We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field," said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week's protest.
"He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him," Sharpton said. [SOURCE]

Calumet City Police Chief Russell Larson confirmed only that an unidentified woman’s body had been found in the area Thursday morning. But Nailah Franklin’s uncle Jon Merrill and family friend Andrew Holms said authorities had told the family the body is that of his 28-year-old niece.
Franklin was reported missing Sept. 19 after she missed a meeting with her boss at Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly. Her car was discovered in Hammond, Ind., on Friday night near an abandoned building.
Shortly before she disappeared, Franklin had filed a police report about getting threatening phone calls from a man she had dated briefly. Chicago police said Monday they had interviewed someone Franklin once dated but have not named a suspect in her disappearance. [READ MORE]

Waymond Anderson, a former R&B artist now serving a life sentence for murder in a separate case, said in an Aug. 20 deposition that he lied as part of a scam to win a monetary settlement from the city.
Anderson's deposition, first reported Wednesday in the Los Angeles Times, states that he was offered a portion of any settlement if he testified that former police Officer Rafael Perez told him that another ex-police officer, David Mack, was involved.
Both Mack and Perez have long denied any involvement in the March 9, 1997, murder of the New York rapper, also known as Biggie Smalls.
"I don't know David Mack, I don't know Rafael Perez," Anderson said in the deposition. "It was a lie, and I'm ashamed of it." [READ MORE]

Darrin: Well, it’s a movie I did two years ago that’s out on DVD now. Directed and written and produced but Nancy Norman. It’s in the same vain as “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” I play a young detective who is a partner to Obba Bomatunde’s character and his daughter has witnessed a murder that seems to have come back to haunt her.
Darrin: Absolutely, I just released a DVD, “Darrin’s Dance Grooves Part 2” and you can find that on my website DarrinHenson.com. I still teach classes, I just taught a class here in L.A. this weekend. Most of the time people go to my website to see what I’m doing and where I’m teaching but I am definitely still heavily involved in choreographing.
Darrin: I just finished filming a movie, The Express, with Dennis Quaid, myself, Charles Dutton, and Rob Brown and that is due out October of 2008. It’s a football film, and I play Jim Brown. So I am excited about that. I am also on a 5 episode arc right now on the ABC Family show Lincoln Heights which comes on Tuesdays at 8.
Darrin: Definitely, my clothing line, just come to my website DarrinHenson.com and check it out. Drop me an email, drop me a note, I answer all the emails myself. Pick up a copy of “Darrin’s Dance Grooves Part 2.”Labels: Darrin Henson, Exclusive

A judge on Friday denied a request to release a teenager whose arrest in the beating of a white classmate sparked this week's civil rights protest in Louisiana.
Mychal Bell is one of the group known as the “Jena Six.” His request to be freed while an appeal is being reviewed was rejected at a juvenile court hearing, effectively denying him any chance at immediate bail, a person familiar with the case told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because juvenile court proceedings are closed.

The album, which his label plans to release in early November, came together over the past few weeks after Jay-Z was shown the film, directed by Ridley Scott, in which Denzel Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a early 1970s Harlem heroin kingpin.
Following the underwhelming critical and commercial reception for his “Kingdom Come” CD late last year — and as Jay-Z grapples with whether to stay on in his post at Def Jam — the tie-in to a major motion picture gives him a chance to rebound strong and extend his reach to a wider audience.
In an hourlong telephone interview, Jay-Z, 37, who has spoken of spending his early years in Brooklyn both rapping and drug dealing, said that the movie had tremendous resonance for him and had sparked a burst of creative activity that even he found surprising. He has already recorded nine tracks, almost every one prompted by a specific scene.
“It was like I was watching the film, and putting it on pause, and giving a back story to the story,” he said.
“It immediately clicked with me,” said Jay-Z, who has made passing references to gangster movies in previous recordings but has never delved so deeply into the genre. “Like ‘Scarface,’ or any one of those films, you take the good out of it, and you can see it as an inspiring film.” [READ MORE]

Remy Ma then sent over her own boyfriend - whom prosecutors also did not name - and his posse, lead prosecutor Michael McIntosh told the judge.

When the witness' rattled boyfriend tried to head for security, he was jumped by the posse of Remy Ma's boyfriend, the prosecutor claimed - leaving the boyfriend with a fracture in his face, and a buddy's jaw broken so severely that his mouth will be wired shut for months.

Sarah said, "I just wanted to let you know that whatever you write about me I want it to be truthful things."
"I never moved out of Atlanta," she said. "I have always lived here and I'm definitely 33. I graduated [from Spelman] in '96. My birthday is next week and I'm going to be 34," she said. "I never ran away from Atlanta because I was pregnant." Sarah, who was born in Minneapolis, said she moved to Atlanta at age 17 to attend Spelman College.
Sarah's response to Kim's assertion that she didn't know her: "A lot of what you said is true about me and Kim. There's so much more to the story than that. She definitely knows who I am," said Sarah. "Yes, it's true, we've had words. [Kim] knew about my pregnancy prior to her getting pregnant. In fact, Kim and I met [Sean] at the same time."
Sarah stressed that she doesn't seek out the spotlight: "That's not for me. I don't enjoy that. I'll let Kim have that"
She also talked about the rumors that surrounded her pregnancy last year: "There's been rumors out there that [Sean Combs] offered me a million dollars to not have the baby, said Sarah. "If he gave me a million dollars I wouldn't be calling him every month for child support," she joked. "I mean, he pays me on a monthly basis, but there's rumors that he offered me a million dollars hush money."
About her longterm relationship with Sean, Sarah said, "He and I are friends, we've always been friends. I've known him for a long time - 13 years exactly. Sarah adding that they dated "on and off" over those years. "I know it sounds very cliché, but we really are friends. It's never been a situation where I'm trying to step on top of [Kim] or I'm trying to be in her position."
Sarah expressed surprise that Kim dropped her name in the Essence interview. "She threw my name in that shit," said Sarah, raising her voice slightly. Regarding Kim's revelation that Kim didn't speak to Sean Combs about Sarah's baby until after her twins were born, Sarah said, "the scary part is that any woman can be with a man and not even mention to him 'oh, I heard you got another woman pregnant' - that's really scary. For the longest time she never mentioned my pregnancy to him. She kept it a secret to herself so it wouldn't take the shine off of her," said Sarah. "I thought [Sean] was lying, but he said Kim never mentioned my pregnancy to him."
Sarah stressed she wanted the opportunity to tell her side of the story in a national forum. "I don't have a voice," she said softly. "I don't have a forum to speak about my child. He has the forum. I'm not a superstar, he's the superstar. He's the person that should be out there acknowledging his child. I'm going on with my daily life and raising my child. We do what we do. We go to Sesame Street and the zoo," said Sarah.
"Now that she's lured me out, let me paint the picture. I don't want anyone else to paint the picture. Let me have a say so," she said. "I need to have a voice. I want to be heard."

At New York's Fashion Week many top designers chose to employ one or two black models and a few Asians in shows and some had none, Reuters reporters who attended over 40 shows by found. Blacks, and blacks in combination with another race, make up about 13 percent of Americans, U.S. Census data shows.See more from the runways of Baby Phat's KLS Collection and Tracy Reese at the Mercedes-Benz 2008 Spring Fashion Week...
Diane von Furstenberg and Baby Phat were among the few that had a more equal racial mix of models. At least half the models used for Baby Phat, which features Kimora Lee Simmons' glitzy urban designs, were black or Asian.
J. Alexander, a runway coach on TV's "America's Next Top Model" who helped produce Baby Phat's show, said the standard for using black models is "two girls, three maximum" per show.
"And you normally get one to make it clear that she is obviously dark too so they don't get any lip from journalists or any backlash for being racist," he said.
Several designers and a few models, including top black model Alek Wek, were reticent to comment on race, although Wek acknowledged difficulties at the start of her career.
"There were people who criticized me but I took no notice," the Sudanese model told Reuters. "You can see I am black, that's who I am.

ESSENCE: Were you always going to be a solo artist?
KEYSHIA COLE: Well, actually, I was gonna be in a group with these two girls. We were in Los Angeles and we were working with Damon Elliot, who is Dionne Warwick’s son, and he was like, “Keysh, if you wanna sign with the girl group, you can; but I’ll sign you solo.” And I was like, I’d rather be solo because I do everything in the group anyway. They’re just pretty. We were gonna get, like, a $30,000 advance and split it ten/ten/ten; but I figured, "Why should I give them my $20,000 when I can get it myself?" So I told them, “I’m sorry, but I can’t.” Then I recorded a couple songs with Damon and one of them was (the hit single) “Love.”
ESSENCE: Early in your career you went to Los Angeles and met legendary music producer Suge Knight and Tupac Shakur. What was that like?
COLE: My brother was close with Pac, he got records with Pac and everything. And Pac’s mother is really cool with my brother and me. So to me, Pac was just like a big brother. That time was like one of the biggest moments in history, and I saw everything. I was with them in Malibu and Vegas and I stayed in the “big house” by myself. I knew the world, the whole industry, everything. I was only fourteen.
ESSENCE: You recently got out of a serious relationship. How’s that been?
COLE: After my ex-boyfriend told me to go on and live my life, I saw him at a place with another girl. I was pissed! I tried to rip her head off. Then he was like, “Dude, you broke up with me.” But that’s just what it is.
ESSENCE: Your sister, Neffeteria, who plays a big part in your BET reality show, The Way It Is (premiering October 30), seems to have had a pretty difficult life. What advice do you give her?
COLE: I’ve told her, “You need to work on you.” After going through so much, you really gotta worry about yourself first. Everything else is secondary. Everything else. Husband, kids…well, not the kids, ’cause she takes care of those babies very well. But really, you gotta work on yourself first. If you don’t, you ain’t gonna be able to deal with people.
ESSENCE: How do you feel about constantly being compared to Mary J. Blige?
COLE: I feel like we are very similar based on everything we’ve been through in our personal lives. It’s helped make us sing the way we sing. Because she didn’t have a vocal coach, and neither did I. And when I met her I told her, “You winning all those Grammy’s—congratulations—it gives me inspiration to this day that maybe I can do the same thing.” You know, it’s just a real big life circle. I think there are a lot of things that she could tell me that’d help me. I’m not trying to take nobody’s place or nothing like that. But I’m just saying, as a woman—as a young Black woman—if she knows some of the answers, Give ’em to me!” (Laughing.) But she said that I could call her anytime. I just haven’t done it yet.

Kanye West took a moment from tossing one of his many (and totally played out) hissy fits to tell USA Today, "I have no words."

"I wasn't even coming from the place of who, what, why," Porter tells the magazine. "I laid low and did what women do: I did my background work, collected information [about the other woman]. But I wasn't even on it like that because I was pregnant, and what was bubbling inside me was a blessing from God. I couldn't let my energy be on that. I didn't have time for any drama, trauma and bull----."The October issue of Essence hits newsstands this Wednesday.
As Porter was to learn, the other baby was born five months before Porter and Combs's twins arrived. The mother was Sarah Chapman, 33, who lives in Atlanta, worked in fashion and knew Combs for several years, her attorney tells Essence.
Of Combs's behavior, says Porter, "It's not an original script. He's not the first man who's cheated. He's not the first man who's had a baby outside of his relationship. He's not the originator of this. But at this point in my life – I have girls now – it's a different program."
"I would have preferred to find out from him because that's a man," she says. "I know it's hard for anyone to say to their significant other, 'I've gotten into some s--- and I got a baby on the way.' But men do get caught up in things; I'm not naive to that. Still, there's a right and a wrong way to handle it. Because, most of all, we were friends. Even if I couldn't have understood it as a woman, I would have understood it as a friend." [SOURCE]
