Michelle Obama accepted the invitation to become a honorary member of the first African American sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. This was announced yesterday in Washington D.C. at their public meeting as they celebrate 100 years of Achievement. She joins other notable members, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott-King and will be officially inducted later this week. Honorary membership is Alpha Kappa Alpha's highest honor. Congrats to the future first lady and the AKA organization…

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia Hillary Clinton initially accepted honorary membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha, but later declined due to the sorority's exclusive requirements preventing acceptance into other NPHC organizations.

As a side note, if you have not read the history of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or “Divine Nine,” organizations, no matter if you a member, prospective member, or have no intention to be a member, there is great history to be learned about African Americans in this country. One book I would highly recommend is Paula Gidding’s When and Where I Enter, it has great insight on how sororities and African American women shaped this country. You know what I say...R-E-A-D-A-B-O-O-K!

UPDATE: In other Obama Campaign news, The New Yorker has released the cover of their July 21st issue [click to see cover, I refuse to post] that feature a caricature of Michelle and Barack Obama depicting all the campaign jabs they've been hit with from being unpatriotic to the "terrorist fist jab." Ugghhh...the sad thing is I am not surprised by anything at this point. We have so many more months of this...

Barack Obama's camp calls the cover 'tasteless and offensive.' AGREED!
